Contrast for Emphasis
Proposed September 23, 2025
Contrast makes things stand out. Differences in light and dark, large and small, smooth and rough, red and green, all grab attention. Caravaggio used light and shadow to highlight figures emerging from darkness. Designers highlight a single color on a neutral background. Low contrast creates subtlety, calm, or melancholy. High contrast creates drama. Both are valid. Contrast is one of the simplest, strongest tools of emphasis.
