Leading Lines

Lines guide the eye. Roads, rivers, beams of light, or even a character's gaze create invisible pathways. They lead the viewer into the image, toward the subject, or out of it. Used carefully, they build focus; used carelessly, they can distract. Renaissance perspective lines often converged on Christ; in modern photography, rail tracks or streets draw us in. Artists can even use lines to point beyond the canvas, suggesting something unseen.
